Kitchen scale tare: displayed weight versus physical total load

Tare or Zero changes the display reference. A bowl omitted from the display still loads the platform and cannot be excluded from the model’s capacity.

Record the bowl before zeroing

Note the empty bowl weight, zero it and add ingredients. Zeroing before the next ingredient shows that addition, but the earlier ingredients remain on the platform.

Capacity is a separate indicator

OXO 11176800 separates Zero bowl offset from its 5 kg capacity indicator. Its manual says to remove excess load immediately when Err signals the limit.

Track total load as ingredients accumulate

Do not read the current display as the whole load. Add bowl plus all ingredients; calculate remaining capacity against the model limit or divide the recipe into containers.

Separate negative readings from drift

A negative reading after removing a zeroed bowl is documented for this OXO model. Zero the empty platform before a new measurement. Persistent drift needs surface/contact, battery and model checks, then manufacturer advice.

A worked example

Hypothetical example: bowl 600 g, A 1500 g, then zero and B 1200 g. The screen may show B’s 1200 g, but gross load is 3300 g. With a hypothetical 5000 g limit, 1700 g remains; tare cannot increase it.
