For a front-load washer drain filter, drain the small hose before opening the large cap. On front-load washers with a small residual-water hose behind the lower access panel, drain that hose into a shallow pan before removing the filter. This guide covers that design. Top-load washers and front-load models without the same access layout need their own manual.
A real manual example: distinguish the two drain hoses
This example uses the US LG WM4000H*A manual MFL71728908, Rev.00_070920. It demonstrates how to identify parts in a manual; it is not a procedure for every washer or market variant.
| Manual location | Part to find | What distinguishes it |
|---|---|---|
| Page 7 · Front View ④ | Drain Pump Filter | The filter behind the large round cap. |
| Page 7 · Front View ⑤ and ⑥ | Small Drain Hose and access cover | The small residual-water hose, not the long hose at the back. |
| Page 7 · Rear View ④ | Rear Drain Hose | The same name refers to a different hose connected to the household drain. |
| Page 38 · steps 3→4 | Drain residual water → remove filter | Check that your manual uses this order after switching off and unplugging. |
If the model or small front hose does not match, do not open the cap on the strength of this example. Page numbers can change with revisions; match the document number and section heading too.

Why does water spill out when the filter is opened?
Water can remain behind the pump filter after a wash. There may be considerably more if the washer stopped because it could not drain. LG’s front-load instructions put the small drain hose before the large filter cap for precisely that reason. The amount depends on when the cycle stopped; no single pan size will catch every case.
Wait for water from a hot cycle to cool. If there is a lot of visible water in the drum, a damaged power cord, or a leak near electrical connections, stop and use the model’s service instructions rather than opening a cap experimentally.
Confirm that this is the right type of filter
| What you see | What it means for this guide | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Lower front panel with a narrow hose and large round cap | The sequence below may apply | Cross-check the model manual |
| Only one cap, or a different arrangement | Water may drain differently | Do not force it; look up the exact model |
| Water still standing in the drum | More residual water is likely | Protect the floor and prepare to empty the pan repeatedly |
LG says this style of drain pump filter is found on its front-load and washer-dryer combo models, not its top-load washers. Other brands and generations may differ. A generic video should never override the owner’s manual.
A careful drain-and-clean sequence
- Turn off and unplug the washer. Empty the drum. Let hot water cool.
- Lay down towels and place a shallow pan below the access panel. Keep another container nearby so you can empty the pan without rushing.
- Pull the small hose out only as far as needed. Uncap it over the pan and let water run out. Cap it while you empty a full pan, then continue until flow stops. Pulling too far can kink the hose.
- Open the large filter cap only after draining. On LG’s described models it turns counterclockwise. A little water can still emerge, so leave the towel and pan in place.
- Remove lint and trapped items. Clean the removed filter gently with water and a soft brush; clear reachable debris from the opening as the manual permits.
- Refit the hose plug and filter securely. Close the panel, then run a short cycle to check for leaks.
This ordering is supported by LG’s maintenance guide. Its monthly cleaning recommendation applies to the relevant LG models, not every washer sold worldwide.
Two common questions about drains and the small hose
Is cleaning the pump filter the same as clearing the household drain?
No. The pump filter belongs to the washer; the floor or wall drain belongs to the building’s plumbing. The water-inlet filter is another separate part. If the household drain overflows, do not assume that cleaning the washer filter will fix it. Ask the property manager or a plumber to check that drain.
What if no water comes from the small hose, or the hose comes loose?
No flow does not prove that the washer is empty: do not open the large filter cap on that assumption. LG warns that pulling the hose too far can kink it and stop drainage. Distinguish taking it out of its external holder from a damaged hose or an internal disconnection. If the connection is uncertain, stop using the washer; do not pull harder or dismantle it. Give the service provider the model number and a photo.

If the washer still will not drain
A clean filter does not rule out a kinked drain hose, a blocked household drain or a pump fault. Note the error code, where water emerges, and whether the small hose cap and filter seated properly. LG’s leak guide lists a loose residual-hose plug and a misfitted filter as separate causes. Stop using the machine if leakage continues after refitting; do not keep running test cycles on a wet floor.
Record the cleaning date, anything found in the filter and the error code. If water returns or appears around the cap, you can compare the same location rather than guessing. Stop using a leaking washer; photograph the leak and give the model number and notes to the service provider.
A record to copy before contacting service
Copy these fields into your phone notes and fill only what you actually checked. Mark unknown items as unverified. This is not a form sent to this website.
Date and time: Full model / manual number and revision: Cycle and stage when the symptom occurred / error code: Visible water in drum: yes / no / unverified Switched off and unplugged: checked / unverified Small hose and filter match the manual: yes / no / unverified Checks actually performed / debris found: Reassembly status / leak location: Current status: stopped using / contacting service / other Photos: model (hide unnecessary personal details), error display, water location
Do not rerun a leaking machine or one with an uncertain hose connection just to complete the record. If water makes access to the power connection unsafe, do not touch the plug; seek help.
