Dehumidifier Bucket Smells? Clean the Tank and Filter Separately

If your dehumidifier’s bucket smells, switch the appliance off and unplug it before emptying the water. Wash the bucket first. If the smell is strongest in the outgoing air, inspect the air filter and grilles separately. A cleaning solution suitable for the bucket is not automatically suitable for the filter or the inside of the machine.

Three separate dehumidifier checks: water bucket, air filter and airflow grilles
1 bucket, 2 filter, 3 airflow openings. Check your model’s manual before applying a cleaning agent. Original explanatory diagram.

Start by locating the smell

Does it appear mainly when you empty the bucket? Look at the bucket, lid and corners where water remains. Does it appear mainly when air is blowing? Check the filter and accessible grilles. If a strong smell persists after cleaning those removable parts, or you see contamination deep inside, consult the model manual or the manufacturer’s service team. Smell alone cannot identify a specific mould or its exact location.

Clean the water bucket

  1. Turn the appliance off, unplug it and remove the bucket without spilling water into the housing.
  2. Empty it, then wash the removable bucket as the manual allows. GE Appliances advises dish soap and water for its dehumidifier buckets, followed by a plain-water rinse.
  3. Check corners and other accessible places where water collects. Refit the bucket fully. Before storing the appliance, empty and dry the bucket.

Do not copy a bleach recipe from one model to every machine. GE describes a diluted bleach option for certain water buckets, but this is not a universal instruction for other brands, filters or electrical parts. Check your own manual for permitted agents and concentrations, and never mix different cleaning chemicals.

Check whether the filter can be washed

Even within GE’s range, older and newer filters have different removal steps and cleaning reminders. Find your exact model. If its filter is washable, follow the manual to remove dust or wash it with the specified mild soapy water. Let it dry completely before reinstalling. Do not soak a non-washable filter or run the machine without its required filter.

With the appliance unplugged, wipe accessible intake and outlet grilles and the outer case gently. GE says not to use bleach or abrasive cleaners on the grilles and case of its models and to wipe them dry before reconnecting power. This is not an invitation to pour water onto a heat exchanger or electrical components.

Still smells after cleaning?

When you notice it First area to check Before the next step
While emptying water Bucket, lid and corners Confirm the permitted cleaner
While the fan runs Filter and accessible grilles Dry a washable filter fully
During continuous drainage Hose and drainage route Use model-specific instructions

If there is a burning smell, unusual noise or a leak, stop using the unit and contact the manufacturer. For the separate question of ventilation while drying laundry, read our dehumidifier and window guide.
