Do not put every hood filter in water. A metal grease filter and a charcoal odour filter have different jobs and care rules. Your hood's ducted or recirculating installation determines which parts it uses. Switch it off, let it cool and find the model before removing anything.
- Identify model and venting
- Separate mesh from charcoal
- Wash metal mesh if allowed
- Use the charcoal part number to choose its care

Check the actual installation
A ducted hood carries cooking air outside; a recirculating one returns filtered air to the kitchen. The same convertible hood can be installed either way, so inspect its manual and actual duct arrangement rather than judging from its appearance.
The metal mesh traps grease. A charcoal cartridge is generally used in recirculating mode to reduce odours. Some models stack both parts, which is why one visible mesh does not tell the whole story.
Use the exact filter instructions, not just its material
Charcoal filters include washable and replacement-only types. A black surface or the word “charcoal” does not establish the care method: match the hood model and the installed filter part number to the instructions. Washable and heat-regenerable are not interchangeable claims.
With the hood off and cool, remove the grease filter as the manual directs. If permitted, wash it in warm water with detergent or in the dishwasher, dry it and refit it securely. Beware of sharp edges.
An ordinary charcoal filter is not washable. Use the model's specified replacement and schedule. Whirlpool gives up to about six months under normal use for some of its recirculating filters, not a universal interval. If extraction remains poor or noise rises after filter care, ask a professional to check the fan or duct.
A decision record for your own filter
Save hood model / actual venting mode / filter part number / official document URL and date checked / permitted care in a phone note. If the number is unclear, photograph accessible labels and the whole filter with the hood switched off and cool, then ask the manufacturer to identify it. Matching shape or diameter does not make another filter’s cleaning method suitable.
| Evidence for this part | Next action |
|---|---|
| Metal grease filter; its instructions permit washing | Use the permitted method and detergent, then dry and refit as directed. Check dishwasher permission separately. |
| Charcoal instructions say both non-washable and non-regenerable, or replacement-only | Replace with the specified compatible part. Do not try to restore it by washing or oven drying. |
| This exact part is explicitly washable or regenerable | Follow only its specified process. Do not borrow detergent, temperature, drying or regeneration settings from another model. |
| Part number or care method is unknown, or official documents disagree | Pause washing or heating and ask the manufacturer or parts supplier in the installation country for instructions matching the part. |
Two charcoal filters can have different instructions
- The Electrolux ERI937ST manual identifies charcoal filter W as non-washable and non-regenerable. That instruction is specific to this model.
- IKEA Sweden lists NYTTIG FIL 559 (900.279.72) as washable and reusable. However, its product page and FAQ gave different detergent and drying directions when checked. This guide does not choose one recipe: confirm the current instructions matching the part before treating it.
A worked example
Suppose odours linger in a recirculating installation. Record the grease-filter and charcoal-filter references separately. Care for the metal filter as allowed. If the charcoal instructions require replacement, find the specified part; if they permit washing or regeneration, follow that process. If identification or instructions are unclear, send the manufacturer the model and photos. If airflow remains weak after grease-filter care, check whether fan or duct service is needed before assuming a new charcoal filter will solve it.
Common questions
Can I dry and reuse a charcoal filter?
Drying does not regenerate a replacement-only charcoal filter. Washable or regenerable types require instructions for that exact part. There is no general rule that putting charcoal filters in an oven makes them reusable.
Can the metal mesh go in a dishwasher?
Only if its owner manual allows it.
Is a noisy hood always a filter problem?
No. A fan or duct issue may need service.
