Fitted Sheet Keeps Popping Off? Measure the Mattress and Topper Together

A fitted sheet that comes off does not automatically need replacing with a larger one. Compare three things separately: width and length, the full height it will cover, and the manufacturer's supported mattress thickness. Meeting the height limit alone does not establish a good fit.

Decide which layers the sheet will cover

This guide concerns fitted sheets with elasticated edges. If one sheet wraps around both the mattress and topper, include any pad underneath that sheet. If the cover is for the topper alone, measure that topper instead.

Do not include the bed frame, the height from the floor to the bed surface, or a duvet lying outside the sheet. Defining the covered layers first lets you compare like with like.

Record the footprint and the full covered height

  1. Arrange the mattress, topper and any pad as you intend to use them. Identify which layers will sit inside the sheet.
  2. Measure the actual width and length. Record numbers and units rather than relying on a name such as queen.
  3. Measure vertically along the side from the bottom of the covered stack to its top. Avoid bending the tape or pressing the bedding down to obtain a smaller figure. A straightedge resting lightly across the top can help identify the upper level.
  4. If the sum of the layers' advertised heights differs from your measured total, record the difference and recheck. This is our suggested comparison method, not a product-testing protocol.

Do not confuse fabric depth with supported mattress height

Look first for the manufacturer's maximum mattress thickness or supported height range. If a listing says only 'deep pocket' or '35 cm deep', establish whether that means the sewn fabric depth or the mattress height the sheet is designed to cover.

The IKEA examples below explicitly give a maximum mattress thickness. Do not add a few centimetres to that maximum and assume the sheet will still fit, or subtract a universal allowance from every product. Compare the exact option against its manufacturer's conditions.

The same 180 × 200 cm size can have different height limits

These two options are from IKEA's Korean-market pages, checked on 19 October 2026. They demonstrate how to read specifications; they are not purchase recommendations or hands-on reviews. Do not apply their conditions to another market, article number or option.

A 24 cm mattress plus a 5 cm topper

This is a hypothetical comparison, not a measured bed. Assume a 180 × 200 cm footprint, with only a 24 cm mattress and a 5 cm topper inside the sheet. The total height is 29 cm.

ComparisonWhat it establishes
29 cm stack versus a 26 cm maximumThe stack exceeds the stated limit by 3 cm and fails that height condition.
29 cm stack versus a 36 cm maximumThe stack is 7 cm below the maximum. That difference is not spare fabric or a measured amount available for tucking.
The actual bed is 160 × 200 cmIts width differs from both 180 × 200 cm examples. Passing the height check does not resolve the footprint mismatch.
The listing says only '35 cm deep'The meaning of that depth is unclear. Do not decide suitability until the supported mattress height is confirmed.

Being below a maximum passes only one stated condition. It is not evidence of how the sheet grips the corners, the elastic's condition, or its fit after washing.

If the dimensions match but the sheet still comes off

  • If it happened from the first use, recheck the selected option and the sheet's lengthwise orientation. Note which corner lifts.
  • If it began after adding a topper or pad, remeasure the stack as it is now. The old mattress-only height is no longer the relevant figure.
  • If the change followed laundering, compare the actual wash and dry settings with the care label and inspect the elastic and seams. There is no single shrinkage rate to apply to every fabric.

These checks do not prove a particular cause. Send your measurements and observations to the seller before buying a larger sheet or fixing straps. A sheet that already fits and works comfortably does not need replacing.

A question to send the seller

My bed measures ___ × ___ cm. The mattress, topper and pad enclosed by the sheet measure ___ cm in total height. For option ___, does the stated ___ cm depth mean maximum supported mattress thickness or fabric depth? Please confirm the conditions for this combination, the care instructions, and the return conditions before and after use or laundering.
