Running another drum-clean cycle may miss the real cause of a front-loader smell. Water trapped in the door gasket, detergent residue, laundry left wet and a drain connection problem start in different places. Find where the odour is strongest before choosing a fix.
- Locate strongest odour
- Dry gasket and drawer
- Check detergent and wet loads
- If sewage-like, inspect drain

For a musty smell, check the door and drawer
After a wash, wipe the folds of the rubber door seal and the glass, then dry them. Remove and rinse the detergent drawer only as the manual allows. Take laundry out promptly and leave the door and drawer slightly open when safe so trapped moisture can escape.
Use the amount and type of detergent specified for a high-efficiency machine. Excess detergent or softener may leave residue. Run the model's cleaning cycle with an approved cleaner. Some machines do not permit bleach; never improvise a chemical mixture.
For sewage-like or recurring odour, inspect the drain area
If the smell is stronger near the hose or wall drain than at the door, visually check that the hose is not kinked or disconnected. Do not dismantle plumbing without the right guidance. Persistent sewage odour may need a plumber or the appliance maker.
Record when the smell appears, which wash cycle you used, detergent dose and the strongest location. These observations make a service call more useful than saying only that the whole machine smells.
A worked example
If towels smell musty and the gasket folds stay wet, clean and dry the gasket and drawer, then remove future loads promptly. If the strong smell is confined to the wall drain, another drum-clean tablet is unlikely to address that source; inspect the connection.
Common questions
Should I leave the door open?
When safe, leaving it ajar for a while helps the drum dry.
Will bleach solve every washer smell?
No. Some models prohibit it, and a drain problem needs a different response.
What if wet laundry sat overnight?
Rewash a musty load and dry it promptly.
