Kettle Limescale Removal: Check the Model Before a Vinegar Recipe

Descaling depends on kettle material, model and cleaning product. Check approved products and rinsing instructions before using a recipe found online.

Deposits and electrical base are separate parts of the concept drawing. Use model-specific cleaner and rinsing instructions.

What to check first

The Breville BKE840 ANZ manual specifies a particular cleaner and process. Do not transfer its concentration or timing to another product.

A worksheet you can use

Keep these four fields for future maintenance. The same ingredient name does not mean the same product concentration.

ItemWhat to record
ModelFull code and sales region
Approved cleanerSpecified product or ingredient
ProcessDilution, heating, standing and draining
FinishRinsing and fresh-water boiling requirements

Check in this order

  1. Cool the kettle and unplug before ordinary cleaning
  2. Compare both the manual and cleaner label
  3. Follow the approved procedure and rinsing, never immersing base, cord or plug

If the problem remains

Do not scrape metal or mix cleaners. Cracks, leakage, continuing odour or discoloration should not automatically be called limescale; ask the maker.

BKE840 ANZ C19: separate the solution boils from the fresh-water finish

This sequence summarizes printed page 13 of the Australia/New Zealand BKE840 C19 manual. On 20 October 2026, the Australian product page still linked to this document. It is not a universal method for other markets or revisions. Match the model, market, manual and the cleaner label in your hand before using the quantities.

StageWhat this document specifies and what to check
1. Prepare the solutionAdd 60 mL of Breville Kettle Cleaner to 1 L of water. This is not an instruction to make up a total volume of 1 L. The 60 mL refers to that liquid cleaner, not vinegar or 60 g of citric acid.
2. Fill and boil onceFill with the mixture on a protected surface, boil, then leave for 30 minutes. Remove the kettle from its base for filling; keep electrical connections dry and stay below the maximum mark.
3. Wipe the spoutThe manual specifies a cloth dampened with the same cleaner, followed by wiping it off. Also follow its safety instructions: switch off, unplug and let the appliance cool before manual wiping.
4. Boil the solution againBoil the remaining cleaning mixture a second time, then discard it. This is a different stage from boiling fresh water.
5. Finish with fresh waterAfter discarding the solution, fill with fresh water, boil and discard that water. C19 describes one fresh-water boil-and-discard cycle at this stage.
6. Reconcile the instructionsDo not omit additional rinsing required by the actual cleaner label. If the label conflicts with the manual or the product differs, ask the maker rather than combining instructions.

Reconnect power for the instructed heating stages only; switch off and let it cool before wiping or moving it. Avoid hot steam and solution, and keep the base, cord and plug out of water. This comparison does not verify the current cleaner formulation or equivalence to a product sold in another country.

A vinegar method from the same brand can belong to a different model

The separate BKE700 US/Canada USC B16 manual, printed page 9, lists an alternative: fill the kettle two-thirds full with one part vinegar and two parts water, boil and leave overnight. Discard it, then boil and discard fresh water and repeat that fresh-water step: two fresh-water cycles. That document does not authorize substituting vinegar in the BKE840 procedure. Match model, market and document revision, not just the brand name in a search result.

Decide whether the procedure matches your kettle

What you have confirmedDecision and record
BKE840 ANZ C19 and consistent cleaner instructionsRecord the two solution boils separately from the fresh-water finish. Descaling frequency depends on use and water hardness; do not invent a universal monthly interval.
The model matches but the cleaner is powder or a different productDo not convert 60 mL into spoonfuls or grams. Send the exact cleaner name, label photo, model and manual revision to the maker; ask about permission, dilution and finishing.
Model, market or revision differs or is unknownDo not use this table’s dose before finding the matching procedure. Cracks, leaks or unidentified residue are not a reason to try a stronger cleaner.

Save a maintenance note: model/market/manual revision and page → cleaner name and label directions → separate water and cleaner amounts → first boil and wait → wiping → second boil and disposal → fresh-water boil and disposal → remaining issue and support reply. Mark only completed stages; leave unknown fields unconfirmed.
