Bed Slat Spacing: Measure the Clear Gap, Not Centre to Centre

Before replacing a mattress, check slat width, clear gaps and central support. A matching bed-size name does not establish support compatibility.

What to check first

Tempur-Pedic’s US guidance gives two dimensions: slats at least 3 inches (7.62 cm) wide and clear gaps no greater than 4 inches (10.16 cm). One inch is exactly 2.54 cm. These are this brand’s US conditions, not a universal mattress standard.

A worksheet you can use

Record the open space between adjacent slat edges. Centre-to-centre distance includes the slat itself and answers a different question.

ItemWhat to record
Slat widthWidth of one board
Clear gapDistance between adjoining edges
Centre supportBeam/legs and their condition
RequirementExact mattress model and region

Check in this order

  1. Identify mattress and frame separately
  2. Record dimensions and support condition where safely visible
  3. Send photos and measurements to the maker to confirm the combination

If the problem remains

Have broken/bent slats or a moving frame inspected before use. Do not improvise plywood reinforcement or promise that it preserves warranty.

A worked example

Hypothetical calculation: equal-width slats measuring 8 cm with an 18 cm centre-to-centre distance leave a gap of 18 − 8 = 10 cm. Against the US guidance above, 8 cm ≥ 7.62 cm and 10 cm ≤ 10.16 cm satisfy the two dimensional conditions. If widths differ or slats are bent, measure the clear gap directly instead of using this subtraction.

Check both conditions separately. A 7 cm-wide slat fails the width condition even with a 10 cm gap. A 10.2 cm gap exceeds 10.16 cm; rounding it down to 10 cm does not make it compliant. Near the limit, remeasure the widest gap and discuss measurement uncertainty with the manufacturer.

This is a worked dimensional example, not a physical bed test or approval of use or warranty coverage. Also check centre support, the condition of the slats and frame, and the requirements for the exact mattress and market before deciding whether to keep the combination or have it inspected.
